Li H, Xu H, Zhou Y, Zhang J, Long C, Li S, Chen S, Zhou JM, Shao F. 2007. The phosphothreonine lyase activity of a bacterial type III effector family. Science. 2007 Feb 16;315(5814):1000-3. Pathogenic bacteria use the type III secretion system to deliver effector proteins into host cells to modulate the host signaling pathways. In this study, the Shigella type III effector OspF was shown to inactivate mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) [extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (Erk1/2), c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and p38]. OspF irreversibly removed phosphate groups from the phosphothreonine but not from the phosphotyrosine residue in the activation loop of MAPKs. Mass spectrometry revealed a mass loss of 98 daltons in p-Erk2, due to the abstraction of the alpha proton concomitant with cleavage of the C-OP bond in the phosphothreonine residue. This unexpected enzymatic activity, termed phosphothreonine lyase, appeared specific for MAPKs and was shared by other OspF family members.

A G Protein-Coupled Receptor Is a Plasma Membrane Receptor for the Plant Hormone Abscisic Acid
Bats respond to polarity of a magnetic field
Prevention of neuropathic pain in an animal model of spare nerve injury following oral immunization with recombinant adenovirus serotype 5-mediated NR2B gene transfer

Dear registrant,

This is a reminder that you have been specially selected to participate in a competition to win a free subscription to Nature by recommending a paper on Nature China.

As the number of invitations to recommend a paper is low you have a higher chance of winning! So recommend a paper NOW!

The recommendation with the highest number of votes will be the winner, and the person who made the recommendation will receive a free subscription to Nature. The winner will be announced in Nature China in December 2007.

The three most recent recommendations are:
 Cell & Molecular Biology: A G Protein-Coupled Receptor Is a Plasma Membrane Receptor for the Plant Hormone Abscisic Acid
 Ecology & Evolution: Bats respond to polarity of a magnetic field
 Clinical Medicine: Prevention of neuropathic pain in an animal model of spare nerve injury following oral immunization with recombinant adenovirus serotype 5-mediated NR2B gene transfer

Do you think they are good, or not? Have your say on Nature China. With over 35 papers recommended already we are sure you will be able to find something in your field. If not, then recommend a paper today.

Nature China is a user driven site, which means that we need your help to recommend/vote and comment on the most important research, from China, in your field.

Be sure to check Nature China on a regular basis to see how the paper you have recommended is doing.

NPG Nature Asia Pacific

Rules of entry:
- You must not be an author of the paper
- The paper must be published on or after 1 January 2007
- Papers must be published in a peer-reviewed academic journal in English
- More than 50% of the named authors on the paper must be living and working in China (click here for more information)

Note: Entry into this promotion constitutes permission to use the name and pictures of the participants for promotional purposes without compensation. The winner is required to sign a release form allowing Nature Publishing Group to use their name and picture for promotional use.

2.Exercise, MAPK, and NF-B signaling in skeletal muscle
